About Steve Riggs

Public protection is Riggs' expertise.  His accomplished committee leadership specialized in housing and construction codes and regs. comprehensive financial services, and local government services.   

He represented about 45,000 citizens of the 31st legislative district in southeastern Jefferson County. Riggs began his public service in 1991, retired 2018, and both his lawmaking experience and seniority enabled him to make a big difference in legislative matters on behalf of Kentuckians. Riggs served as the chairman of the important Local Government committee. This committee has jurisdiction over Louisville, Lexington, and 400 other cities, plus 120 counties in Kentucky. He was also the top senior and ranking member of the Banking and Insurance Committee for almost 10 years passing or advising on important legislation dealing with health insurance.  He also served on the Transportation Committee and passed many new laws with help of his state Senate colleagues.

-Riggs served in 2015 as the Kentucky State Director in the Draft Joe Biden for President  organization. 

-Riggs served in the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary for over 15 years and previously served as a Flotilla Commander. 

-The Kentucky League of Cities (KLC) gave Riggs their Legislator of the Year Award in 2008. In 2018, his last year, he received the Best Friend Award from KLC. This was earned by passing numerous pieces of legislation to improve the management, professionalism, and efficiency of local governments for which we all count on for a variety of services like police, fire, and EMS. 

In 2017, Riggs was selected by state legislators as President of a 50 state organization-The National Council of Insurance Legislators.   NCOIL passes model laws for all the states to utilize.

Riggs graduated from University of Kentucky in 1981 with a Bachelors degree in Business Administration. He is a co-partner of an insurance brokerage firm in Louisville which specializes in commercial insurance and has clients in many states. He has been married to Jenny, his wife and "college sweetheart", for 32 years and has two adult children.

 Jenny is an elementary school teacher in Jefferson County.
